A custom-made mouthguard is the best way to protect the teeth and mouth from trauma when playing sport. Contact sports such as football, soccer, hockey and basketball place your child at risk of sustaining a potentially preventable dental injury.
Mouthguards can prevent:
Lip, tongue and cheek lacerations
Broken or chipped teeth
Knocked out tooth
Jaw injuries
Concussions (reduces the risk)

Investing in a quality mouthguard can give you the peace of mind that your child is protected and can help to reduce the severity of any potential jaw injuries. When it comes to mouthguard it really is a matter of “you get what you pay for”.
There are two store-bought options:
Stock mouthguards
Boil-and-bite mouthguards
Stock mouthguards are the cheapest option. They are made of rubber and the shape cannot be changed to improve the fit. This style of mouthguard is held in pace by continuously biting down. Stock mouthguards offer minimal protection and can effect talking and breathing.
Boil-and-bite mouthguards are softened in hot water and then ‘bitten’ into to shape around the teeth. These options, while a better fit than stock mouthguards, are no comparison to a custom-made mouthguard from the dentist. They are thick and bulky so often still effect breathing and speech.
A custom-made mouthguard offers the maximum level of protection for the teeth, with it’s close fitting design. A custom-fitted mouthguard although thinner than store-bought options, are a more durable option. The combination of thinner materials and better fit mean custom-made mouthguards offer superior comfort, therefore are more likely to be worn more consistently to provide greater protection.
What does a custom-made mouthguard cost?
Mouthguards are an essential piece of protective equipment for kids participating in sports. A custom-made mouthguard from your dentist does cost more than store-bought options, however the benefits far outweigh the cheaper option.
Many private health funds cover the full cost of mouthguards, with no gap. Check with your private health fund to see if your individual plan has this cover.

Looking after your Mouthguard
The mouth is home to bacteria and plaque, so it’s important to keep your mouthguard clean between uses.
After use, the best way to look after them is to throughly wash the mouthguard with your toothbrush and toothpaste, like you would your own teeth! Alternatively, you can put the mouthguard in a cup of warm soapy water, or use a denture cleaning tablet. Avoid hot water on your mouthguard as it can damage it.
Before use, simply rinse in cold water or mouthwash before putting in your mouth.
Tip Bring your mouthguard to your regular dental check-ups, so your dentist can inspect it and make sure it’s in top condition!.
